When Eco-Friendly Stops Being an Option and Becomes a Condition
Sustainable China Sourcing — Recycled Materials, RoHS, REACH, and Spotting Greenwashing

"The buyer suddenly wants GRS-certified fabric only — I asked the factory and they just say 'we have it.'"
"The product's fine, but Amazon is asking for a material test report. How do I even get that from the factory?"
"Every factory catalog says 'eco-friendly,' 'eco,' 'recycled material.' Can I just take that at face value?"
A few years ago, eco-friendly was closer to an optional add-on — you tacked it on if the brand wanted it, skipped it if not. Lately it feels different. Large retailers' listing conditions, European regulation, and consumers' eyes are all pointing the same way, and eco-friendly is shifting from "nice to have" to "can't sell without it." The catch is what happens when that demand finally reaches the factory: how does the buyer confirm and verify it? A green leaf icon printed on a catalog proves nothing on its own.
Here's the point up front: sustainable sourcing gets far clearer once you split it into two axes. One is "what is it made of" — actually finding recycled and sustainable materials, and confirming they're real through certification. The other is "what was kept out" — whether it clears hazardous-substance rules like RoHS and REACH, seen as a materials-and-chemicals question. And running through both is a final gate: greenwashing verification — taking the factory's spoken "eco" claim and answering it back with documents, certificate authenticity and test reports. Today we walk through these three strands from a buyer's perspective.
Having covered product certification around KC, CE, FDA, and CCC at a high level (#10), and packaging optimization from a cost-and-branding angle (#15), today is the story of what sits between them — materials and chemicals. Less about the certification stamp itself, more about whether the material that stamp points to is real.
1. Why Sustainable Sourcing, Why Now
Read sustainable sourcing as merely an "ethical-consumption trend" and you catch only half of it. The forces actually moving buyers arrive from three directions at once.
First is the customer's demand. As large platforms like Coupang and Amazon and European retailers set ESG targets, that burden travels down the supply chain to sellers and manufacturers. Requirements like "state your recycled-content ratio" or "cut plastic in the packaging" start attaching to listing conditions and product reviews. It isn't that the brand wants it — it has become a condition you meet if you want to sell.
Second is regulation. Europe keeps pushing harder on recycled content and recyclability through packaging rules (PPWR) and ecodesign, and the chemical rules we'll look at — RoHS and REACH — have steadily widened their scope. Regulation doesn't come and go like a trend; once it tightens, it rarely rolls back. That's the key.
Third is the consumer. Younger shoppers especially treat "how was this made" as one of their reasons to buy. Whether you can put a recycled-content figure or a certification logo on the listing now moves conversion. There's a trap here, though. Wave "eco-friendly" around without evidence and get caught in a greenwashing row, and you're worse off than if you'd said nothing.
2. Recycled & Sustainable Materials — What to Find, and How
The first axis of sustainable sourcing is materials. Sorting out the materials that come up most often makes conversations with factories far less circular. Below are the ones you meet most in practice, with the certification that tends to sit beside each.

rPET and recycled fabric — GRS and RCS are the core
The first certifications to know for recycled materials are GRS (Global Recycled Standard) and RCS (Recycled Claim Standard). Both are international standards that trace and certify how much recycled content actually went in, and both are managed by Textile Exchange, a US non-profit. Put very simply, RCS focuses on the recycled content itself, while GRS goes further to also cover environmental, social, and chemical criteria — the broader standard. So when European or US buyers ask, it's usually GRS they mean.
There's a common mix-up when you ask a factory. If the factory answers "we have GRS," it feels settled — but the factory holding a GRS certificate and this product I ordered being made from GRS material are two different things. If the certificate sits with the fabric mill but the sewing or assembly happens somewhere uncertified, you may not be able to put GRS on the finished product. We'll come back to this in the greenwashing section.
PLA and bioplastics — be careful with the word "biodegradable"
PLA and other bioplastics come from plant feedstock like corn, and some biodegrade under specific conditions. Blur the terms here, though, and it bites you later. "Bio-based" means the feedstock came from plants; "biodegradable" or "compostable" means it breaks down after disposal — and these are different concepts. On top of that, much PLA only breaks down under the specific conditions of an industrial composting facility, not if you simply leave it in nature. Write "naturally degradable" on a listing and fail to back it up, and that itself becomes greenwashing. It's safer to pin down with the factory, at the sourcing stage, under what conditions and to what test standard it degrades.
FSC paper packaging — the easiest way in
If the product itself is hard to change, starting with packaging is the realistic entry point (#15). Among the options, FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) certification attests that the paper and pulp came from responsibly managed forests, and it applies fairly easily to paper packaging like boxes, shopping bags, and hang tags. China already has many FSC-certified paper mills and printers, so running a print job on certified paper is generally no great hurdle. The principle stays the same, though: to put the FSC logo on printed matter, that printer must hold FSC CoC (Chain of Custody) certification to use the logo properly.
The price premium — a realistic range
Switching to sustainable materials does raise the unit cost — that's real. It's not the factory's fault; recycled feedstock is often pricier than virgin material or comes with shaky supply. The exact spread varies a lot by item, quantity, and certification scope, but for a rough feel: recycled fabric or rPET trims tend to run around 10–30% over conventional material, and once you formally attach certification at low volume, it can widen beyond that. FSC paper packaging carries a lighter load, often absorbed in the single digits to low teens percent.
3. Hazardous Substances — Through a Materials-and-Chemicals Lens
The second axis of sustainable sourcing is "what was kept out." To avoid overlapping with #10, which covered certification broadly, here we look only through the narrow lens of the chemicals inside the material. What matters is precisely that recycled material isn't automatically free of hazardous substances. Chemicals from a prior use can ride along during recycling, so "eco" and "non-toxic" have to be confirmed separately.

RoHS — for electricals, think at the material level
RoHS is Europe's rule limiting hazardous substances in electrical and electronic products, setting permitted content for lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, and currently ten substances in all. The practical point is that RoHS applies not only to the finished product but to each material and component inside it. Cable insulation, solder, plating, plastic housing — none may exceed the limits. So for any product with even a little electronics in it, the right move is to demand a test report per material from the factory, not the words "RoHS is fine."
REACH / SVHC — practically a baseline for anything Europe-bound
REACH broadly governs chemicals — and products that contain them — entering Europe. What buyers cite most is SVHC (Substances of Very High Concern); this candidate list, maintained by the European authority, keeps growing and now runs well past 200 substances. If a product contains one of these above a certain threshold, obligations like notification and information transfer kick in. For any material where chemistry is even a little involved — plastics, rubber, coatings, pigments, adhesives — you should treat REACH as a default starting point for anything Europe-bound.
Korea children's products — hazardous substances in the material
If the product is aimed at children, hazardous-substance safety requirements apply separately in Korea too. It particularly looks at whether substances like phthalate plasticizers, lead, and cadmium sit in the material. The more the product touches a child's hands and mouth — plastic toys, school supplies, baby goods — the stricter this gets. The way to confirm is the same: a factory saying "no problem" and a test report from an accredited lab showing the numbers are within limits carry entirely different weight.
4. Greenwashing Verification — Answering the Factory's "Eco" Back with Paper
This is the heart of today. However well you know the two axes above, it's for nothing if you can't verify the "eco" claim the factory puts forward. Greenwashing usually isn't a grand lie — it grows in vague wording and mismatched scope: "uses recycled material" when the content is 5%, or a certificate that exists but doesn't apply to this product. So verification becomes a matter of tracing three things through documents.
Certificate authenticity — cross-check against the Textile Exchange database
When a factory sends a copy of a GRS or RCS scope certificate, the principle is to cross-check directly against the issuer's public database rather than trust the sheet itself. GRS and RCS are managed by Textile Exchange, and certified sites (factories) and valid certifications are registered in a public database. Match the factory name, certificate number, and validity period on the certificate you received against that official listing, and you'll filter out a good share of forged or expired certificates. A single PDF can be edited at will; a public register can't.
Certification scope — "who, and what" was certified
Even a genuine certificate leaves a next question: does the scope of this certification include my product? A certificate states the certified company, the covered product categories, and the material types. You have to see whether it's a certification for yarn or for the finished product, and whether the certified entity is the very factory that actually makes my goods. As noted, a fabric mill's GRS certificate alone doesn't carry the certification through sewing and assembly, so you may not be able to put GRS on the finished product. Checking scope means matching the certificate's name and range against the actual processes of my order.
Test reports — through accredited labs like SGS and Intertek
Hazardous substances (RoHS, REACH, and so on) and material properties are confirmed separately, by a test report. What matters here is the lab that issued it. A report from an internationally accredited lab like SGS, Intertek, Bureau Veritas (BV), or TÜV carries high credibility. When you get a report, check the issuing lab, whether the test items match the regulation you asked about, whether the tested sample is actually your product or material, and whether the issue date isn't too old. Recycled reports and reports reused from a different product turn up surprisingly often.
- It only says "eco," "eco-friendly," or "non-toxic" and can't specify which certification or standard
- They send a certificate but it doesn't come up in the public database, or they're reluctant to have it checked
- The certificate's company name or product range doesn't match the factory or item on my order
- The test report is from an unnamed local lab, or dated years ago
- Asked about recycled content, they can't give a figure and only say "a lot goes in"
- Asked to cover certification/testing costs, they suddenly ask "can't we just write that it has it?"
That last item matters most. If a factory readily agrees to insert an unsupported eco claim, that also means it does the same for other buyers. The factory that answers your verification requests point by point, with documents, is the one you can trust for the long run.
5. The Practical Flow and Negotiation Points
Lay everything above onto the actual sourcing sequence and it runs like this. Keep the order and you save wasted trips and cost.
- Fix the requirements: start by pinning down exactly what the buyer or platform asks. Not "eco-friendly" but "GRS-certified, recycled content 50%+" or "a REACH SVHC report" — nail it down with certification and numbers so factories and quotes don't spin in circles.
- Screen factories: put the requirements first and request certificates and test reports at the quotation stage. Places that can't produce documents get filtered out early.
- Verify: cross-check the certificates received against the public database, and confirm scope and the issuing lab (Section 4).
- Negotiate: work out the price premium, MOQ, and fixed certification costs.
- Production and inspection: confirm the mass-production goods come out in the same material as the approved sample, via pre-shipment inspection (#47).
The point to watch most in negotiation is the relationship between MOQ and unit cost. Sustainable materials, especially certified ones, tend to carry a higher minimum than ordinary products because of the fixed costs mentioned earlier. Securing recycled feedstock separately, running the certified line, and issuing transaction certificates simply don't fit small runs well. So if you want a "small eco test," it's realistic to either start expecting the unit cost to jump, or convert to eco starting from the lighter parts — like FSC packaging — rather than the whole product.
6. Sustainable Sourcing Checklist
Material check
- Specified the buyer/platform requirement with certification and numbers, not "eco-friendly"
- Confirmed recycled content and material type with the factory as figures
- Set the MOQ with the price premium and fixed certification costs in mind
Hazardous-substance check
- Identified the regulation that fits the product (RoHS, REACH, children's products)
- Confirmed hazardous substances separately, even for recycled material
- Requested test reports at the material/component level
Greenwashing verification
- Cross-checked GRS/RCS certificates against the Textile Exchange database
- Confirmed the certification scope actually covers my product and processes
- Got test reports from accredited labs like SGS or Intertek, freshly issued
